Born on 30 April 1946, he ascended the throne in September 1973. Aged 27, Carl Gustaf became Europe’s youngest monarch at the time.

Known for his long standing commitment to the environment, King Carl XVI Gustaf is a real lover of the outdoors. He was a scout from an early age, and today serves as honorary chairman of both the Scouts of Sweden and the World Scout Foundation.
According to the constitution, the monarch of Sweden has no political affiliation or formal powers; duties are mainly ceremonial and representative.
In 1980, the Swedish Succession Act was retroactively made gender neutral, meaning the eldest child of the monarch inherits the throne regardless of gender.
As a result, next in line to the Swedish throne is Crown Princess Victoria, born in 1977 – the first of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s three children.
