Ham Radio | The Mission Defines the Methods and Tools
Emergency communications is not simply about making contacts. Mission-focused EMCOMM begins with a defined requirement: who needs to communicate, what information must be delivered, where the stations must operate, how quickly the message must arrive, and what communications failures must be overcome.
Activities such as POTA can build valuable operating experience, confidence, and efficiency. However, random contacts are not the same as delivering specific information to a required destination. In emergency communications, success is measured by whether the mission is completed, not by the number of contacts made.
In this video, I explain how the mission defines the radios, antennas, power systems, software, transportation, navigation, and support equipment we use. I also walk through my ATV-based emergency communications platform and one of several QRP and QRO field configurations I can deploy remotely.
Today’s ham radio field station includes an Icom IC-705, Microsoft Surface Go, N9SAB linked-fed half-wave antenna, and GigaParts carbon-fiber telescopic mast. The ATV expands my emergency communications capabilities and operating areas by carrying communications equipment, portable power, Starlink, navigation, shelter, recovery equipment, fuel, tools, and personal support gear into remote locations.
The objective is communications resilience. HF, VHF, UHF, Winlink, JS8Call, Starlink, Internet services, and Meshtastic each provide different capabilities. A PACE plan organizes Primary, Alternate, Contingency, and Emergency communications methods so the mission can continue when individual systems fail.
The mission defines the methods and tools we use. Our job is to make sure we can get there, establish the station, and operate when and where the mission requires it.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
