People in Haiti often say the nation’s soul was born in the mountains.
Here, steep slopes turn roads into narrow paths, and those paths into trails. The only way to reach small patches of farmland scattered across the hillsides is on foot. These family plots, woven into the surrounding landscape, look more like gardens than fields — just enough to keep a community alive.
Life in the countryside has its own rhythm. Families cook, speak, and sing in ways that preserve traditions passed down for centuries. Homes are arranged around the “lakou,” a communal courtyard where daily life unfolds. From the first freed slaves who became farmers to the present day, cultivating the land remains central to Haitian identity, sustained by age-old beliefs and spirituality. Nature itself is seen as sacred, and from this reverence voodoo was born.
Yet farmers face relentless struggles. Deforestation strips the land. Medical care is scarce. Electricity is rare. Without irrigation, machinery, or storage, many leave their villages in search of survival. What remains, though fragile, continues to embody Haiti’s deepest roots.
