At the farthest reaches of Siberia, the road eventually disappears into mud. Beyond it, only a rough track continues through an immense and seemingly endless dark forest. Hidden deep within this landscape are isolated hamlets where a handful of people have chosen, or been forced by circumstance, to remain.
These communities are slowly fading away. Poverty, isolation and alcoholism have taken their toll, while the villages themselves seem to dissolve a little more with every passing year. Reaching them means travelling as far as the road will allow, then pushing beyond it into a world increasingly cut off from everything outside.
The Dark Forests journeys into this forgotten Siberia not simply to document hardship, but to encounter the people who continue to live there and to ask what remains when almost everything else has disappeared. At the end of the road, amid mud, silence and abandonment, the film searches for something profoundly human.
