The Awa is one of the central pillars of Bribri culture in Costa Rica — a guardian of history, memory, and ancient wisdom in a community that, until recently, preserved its heritage entirely through oral tradition. Acting as a bridge between earthly life and the vast spiritual cosmos of the underworld, the Awa is both healer and master of the medicinal properties of plants. People from surrounding villages travel to his Usure to seek guidance, remedies, and blessings.
The title of Awa is passed down through the maternal line. From childhood, the chosen one embarks on a long path of learning — first within the family, then under the mentorship of a master — before being recognized by the entire community. This knowledge, passed from generation to generation, sustains the Bribri way of life.
For the Bribri, the mineral world holds a sacred place. They believe their god, Sibù, gifted them stones as powerful tools to communicate with the underworld and to heal the living. These stones are treasured not only as spiritual instruments, but as symbols of a people’s enduring connection to the earth and the unseen.
