Off the northern coast of Madagascar, in the dry and windswept Mitsio archipelago, live the Antakarana people. Though they now rely on the sea, their name means “from the rocky land” — a reflection of their inland origins.
More than 150 years ago, the Merina king from the highlands pushed his people’s rice cultivation all the way to the coast. Forced to flee, the Antakarana migrated north and settled on this harsh, unforgiving land. With poor soil and little freshwater, agriculture was nearly impossible. Over time, these former land-dwellers transformed into skilled seafarers.
For generations, they have fished in traditional pirogues — small sailboats with outriggers — mastering the ocean just as their ancestors once mastered the land. Then came the outsiders, offering money in exchange for dinga-dinga — sea cucumbers prized in global markets. Though unfamiliar and risky, free diving soon became a lifeline. With no masks or fins at first, divers taught themselves to descend deeper and deeper, enduring extreme exhaustion to harvest what lay beneath the waves. But the ocean offers no guarantees.
