Event date: 27 April 2023. Mark Stott, IOActive Security Consultant, presents the various methods used to extract data fro devices.

When a security researcher is pen-testing embedded devices, they often encounter a need to extract a file, or filesystem from the device for further investigation - the irony may lie with the device being secure enough to prevent such activities from taking place.

Exploring the various methods that can be used to extract the desired data from a device, the advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed; covering the range of methods from the straight-forward data extractions to the more devious and complex approaches.

The focus remains on embedded devices, but these concepts apply to other areas where the security posture of various systems are being investigated.
