This is a short selection from one of my Introduction to Philosophy classes taught at Marist College, a session which was focused on the Self-Consciousness section of G.W.F Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit, specifically on the "Master-Slave Dialectic". This is a bit of an introductory-level lecture, intended to help students who have no background in philosophy better understand this rather difficult text.

In this short bit which is from midway through the lecture, I discuss why, in human social settings, there is never enough of what Hegel calls recognition (Anerkennen), provided by one self-consciousness to another, to satisfy the desires that all self-consciousnesses have for that
