I found a recipe for Alaskan Salmon online. I can’t see why it wouldn’t work for little Ohio pond fish. I have fish in the freezer, but nothing beats fresh fish. The fishing conditions are terrible with temperatures in the 90s but I’m determined to at least try for fresh fish this evening. Read below for the recipes, fishing equipment, and more.

Fish recipe:

from here allrecipes.com/recipe/16699/firecracker-grilled-alaska-salmon/?internalSource=staff%20pick&referringId=15473&referringContentType=recipe%20hub&clickId=cardslot%207

1½ pounds of bass, bluegill or crappie fillets
½ cup peanut oil
4 TBS light soy sauce
4 TBS balsamic vinegar
4 TBS chopped green onions
3 TBS brown sugar (or Twin brown sugar substitute)
2 cloves of minced garlic
1½ teaspoon of ground ginger
1½ teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon of sesame oil
½ teaspoon of salt

DIRECTIONS:
Place fish filets in a sufficiently large nonporous glass dish.
In a separate medium bowl, combine the peanut oil, soy sauce, vinegar, green onions, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, sesame oil and salt.
Whisk together well, and pour over the fish.
Cover and marinate the fish in the refrigerator for 4 hours.
Heat an outdoor grill to about 425° F.
For small fillets use a special grate with small holes.
Oil the grate generously.
Place the fillets on the grate and close the grill lid.
Grill the fillets for 5 minutes (for small fish, there is no need to flip them).
With a spatula, transfer to a platter and keep in a warm oven.
Pour all excess marinade into a small sauce pan and heat it to boiling.
When reduced and thickened, spoon over the fish fillets and serve.

Brussels Sprouts on the Grill

INGREDIENTS
1½ pounds fresh Brussels sprouts
(1 pound after trimming and quartering)
6 strips of bacon (I used 7)
1 tablespoon olive oil
½ to 1 teaspoon salt
13 x 9 inch foil disposable cake pan

INSTRUCTIONS

Trim stems, and wilted leaves from Brussels sprouts
Quarter or rough chop them
Toss the sprouts with the olive oil.
Sprinkle them with the kosher salt. Set aside.
Cut strips of bacon into one inch pieces.

Spread the bacon over the sprouts and mix it in well.
Heat the grill to medium to medium high (about 425°F).
Dump the sprouts and bacon into an aluminum foil 13 x 9 inch pan.
Toss the aluminum pan on the grill. Close the lid. Stir about every 5 minutes.
The sprouts and bacon will be done in 25 minutes. Some pieces will be crisp and charred, others will be golden, and others will be green and look steamed.
Remove the Brussels sprouts from the foil pan to a plate and serve.

Fishing equipment used:

The lure is a Panfish Assassin Tiny Shad, 1.5" in color “black shad.”

The spinning reel is a Pflueger Trion GX-5. This model is no longer made.

The spinning reel line is SpiderWire, Ultracast, Invisi-Braid in 10 pound test, 2 pound monofilament equivalent.

The spinning rod is a tiny Daiwa SMC401ULFS Spinmatic-C SpinRod (4- Feet, Ultra Light, 1 Piece, 1-4 pound line test recommended). It can be found on Amazon, Fish USA, and other places.

The boat is a Bass Hunter ordered from Bass Pro Shops about 12 years ago. They no longer sell it. Also, this model is no longer available, but newer models like it are still sold. THE LAKE:
Was named Lake Ketchabigwon by the native Americans who sold me the property for a good amount of wampum. Actually it is a 6 acre reservoir constructed 45 years ago. It is located in NE Ohio. It has very few weeds due to an overstocking of grass carp from 1987-1990. The grass carp are slowly dying off and being harvested through bow fishing.

FISH IN THE LAKE:
largemouth bass, bluegill, white crappie, black crappie, yellow perch, channel catfish, and grass carp

WHY KEEP SMALL BASS:
Biologists performed an electroshock survey of the lake. They found too many small, stunted bass. Their advice was to remove all bass under 12 inches, and to release the bigger ones. This rule is usually the opposite in large public lakes.
