There is a universal truth with many of my favorite heavy compositions. They come from an artist who is suffering emotionally; somehow misery allows musicians to dig DEEP into their pain & utilize their talents to conjure up malignant riffs OR verbalize secret rage. However, the irony lies in when such artists find peace,….their musical prowess dissipates as well. One musician from the San Antonio scene who THANKFULLY hasn't found peace quite yet is Jonah Hernandez from deathcore outfit Grieved! Jonah who began his career most notably with the now defunct metalcore band, From Graves, has now coupled his pain with his love for ALL things morbid & ominous; bringing dark tales to life with his deep end growls & down tuned guitars. It was that brutality which became endearing to me when the band's 2024 4-song EP, 'You Will Know When I'm Gone' crossed my desk last year. YWKWIG embodied the essence of a horror movie in metal form & that element continues this year with the band's latest single, 'Cruel Life'. In addition, after continuing to hear of Jonah's contributions as a ghost writer, I knew it was about time to get him in front of our cameras to immerse myself into his unique psyche. SO, on April 26th, 2025 I invited Johah over to the RMW Studio to discuss it ALL. In the interview below you will see us discuss the following: his history in the SA scene, being the mastermind, his musical development, the recording process (& working with Coco of Dark Tone Audio), his lyrical themes, NEW music, his love of video (& horror movies), some cool stories & MUCH more!
