Great Spotted Woodpeckers drum loudly in spring to defend territory and attract mates. In this video you can hear the sound of woodpeckers drumming and find out more about the purpose and science behind this bird behaviour.

Great Spotted Woodpeckers can deliver up to forty strikes per second when drumming. These short bursts of sound can travel hundreds of metres through the forest. Both males and females drum, using resonant surfaces as natural amplifiers to broadcast their presence.
