Once a rare visitor to northern Europe, the Great Egret - known as the Great White Egret in the UK - has made an incredible comeback. Over the last few decades, this elegant wetland bird has expanded its range northward and westward across Europe.
The Great Egret first bred in France in 1994, with two pairs nesting in the Camargue region. The egrets continued their spread north, and in 2012, the Great Egret first bred in England at the Shapwick Heath nature reserve on the Avalon Marshes in Somerset. In 2023, Great Egrets first bred in Scotland, and in 2025 chicks were successfully hatched in Wales for the first time.
