Great Smoky Mountains Railroad: #1702 Nantahala Gorge 5-27-29-2022.
On Memorial Day weekend 2022, we ventured our way up to the Smokies of North Carolina to see the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad's steam locomotive #1702. One reason we wanted to go see the 1702 this weekend was because we heard about it having a new paint scheme. This scheme was in the style of a Southern Railway freight appearance. Including the scheme, there have been some other notable changes including:
- Gold lettering with the "High Tower Text" font
- The bell was modified to an auto-bell instead of being hand rung
- The headlight now is duel beamed instead of single beamed
- The stack was modified to give it a less choppy sound (which I love)
*The paint job is not completely finished yet (as evident by the blank below fireman's cab window). The crew said the lettering will be modified (since the unnamed contractor didn't do the greatest) and hopefully before long the engine will be complete. Obviously, the crew/contractors will not be perfect, and even with the issues, I think the crew did a fantastic job on the new paint. Obviously, we will hopefully be back before the end of the year to see 1702 again.
Also, in regard to the older guy we saw in the video, a lot of times in this hobby there will be these types of people and you will run into them no matter how hard you try not to. Unless there is something special on the consist or I am just not having it that day, I'll usually be ok with the bombing as long as you are not in my way of the engine. However, there are certain times that make you wonder why they did not choose a better alternative. But this is all part of life. Just take it as it comes.
