Julius Caesar is one of the most important figures in Roman history. In the century before Christ he managed to seize hold of Europe and shape it to his will. Born in 100 BC, Caesar grew up pursuing the Roman ideal of glory. His career began humbly as a minor civil servant. Captured by pirates, his powers of oratory and persuasion saved his life. A series of promotions allowed Caesar to embark on successful campaigns to gain territory for Rome, waging the Gallic Wars, followed by his invasion and conquest of Britain. His successes established him firmly as a great but bloodthirsty general, and politically ambitious man. In 44 BC he was voted Dictator for life, but Caesar had become a tyrant and paid the price when he was assassinated by his rivals.
