Thomas Gainsborough was the founder of the English school - a master landscape artist and portrait painter whose influence has spanned the centuries. Born in Sudbury, England in 1727, he was sent to London to study under Gravelot and Hayman, but he really established himself in the 1760’s when he moved to the city of Bath in the west country of England. Among Gainsborough’s great works are ‘Lord and Lady Howe’, ‘Mrs Portman’, ‘Blue Boy,’ The Harvest Wagon’ and ‘The Watering Place’.
