Sir Anthony Van Dyke, born the son of a cloth manufacturer in Antwerp, was one of the great masters of portraiture in the seventeenth century. Van Dyke managed to capture the character of his subjects, who were always painted in sumptuous settings and, as befitted their status, always with a hint of flattery.
