For a man who spent his entire life in the village where he was born in 1460, Hieronymous Bosch had an electric effect on the world of art, even being adopted in the 20th century as a precursor of the modern surrealist movement. Bosch’s world was a nightmare of bizarre visions and fantasies and he is famous for a series of devotional woodcuts that were inexplicably accepted by the church for which he worked. A great many of his works are now in the Prado in Madrid, including his masterpiece ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’. This is his story.
