Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was born into a wealthy aristocratic family in 1864. He was a frail child and an accident when he was fourteen saw him break both his legs, which resulted in stunted growth. Heavily influenced by Degas, Lautrec drew inspiration from the prostitutes, actors and dancers of the Montmartre area, subject matter that allowed him to memorably portray human frailty and passion behind the harsh veneer of every day life. The creator of such great works as ‘Moulin Rouge’ and ‘The Bar’ sunk into a life of alcoholism during the 1880’s, which brought on a complete breakdown. Venereal disease was the cause of the stroke that killed him aged only 37 in 1901.
