The Russian invasion, well planned and supported and advancing at the rate of 100 kilometres a day, took the Japanese by surprise, but although their High Command back home surrendered a few days later, many of the Japanese troops – fanatical patriots and fighters – refused to surrender, others never heard the news of the capitulation and fought on. Eventually the fighting petered out and the scale of the Soviet victory became clear, over 87,000 Japanese had been killed, and some 594,000 taken prisoner. By contrast, Soviet casualties were just 30,000, with 8,219 listed as killed.
