It was the battle in the air over Europe that dictated what was possible strategically on the ground. As the war turned in the Allies favour the cities of Hamburg, Cologne, Darmstadt and Dresden were firebombed causing 200.000 deaths. Casualties in the air were heavy too, over 115.000 British and American airmen never came home. 17.000 aircraft were lost by the allies. But bombing and bomb technology was moving fast, as was soon to be seen in the Japanese city of Hiroshima when the first Atomic bomb was dropped.
