🚶♂️ Just Walking – No Talking
Gordale Scar, Malham Cove and Malham Tarn Walk – Yorkshire Dales
A varied and atmospheric walk through one of the Yorkshire Dales’ most celebrated landscapes, beginning at the woodland waterfall of Janet’s Foss before continuing through Gordale Scar, Malham Cove, and finally up toward the open stillness of Malham Tarn. This route brings together almost everything that makes the Dales special: tumbling water, limestone cliffs, dry stone walls, grazing sheep, wide skies, and a deep sense of geological drama.
🕰️ Highlights, History & Local Lore
The walk begins at Janet’s Foss, a beautiful waterfall tucked within leafy woodland near Malham. Its name comes from Janet, or Jennet, said in local folklore to be the queen of the fairies who lived in a cave behind the falls. Whether taken as legend or old countryside storytelling, it gives the place a quiet enchantment — water spilling over limestone into a clear pool beneath the trees.
From there, the route continues to Gordale Scar, one of the great natural spectacles of the Yorkshire Dales. This narrow limestone ravine rises sharply on either side, with waterfalls hidden deep within its towering walls. Carved over thousands of years by glacial meltwater and stream erosion, it feels almost cathedral-like — enclosed, echoing, and suddenly dramatic after the gentler approach through fields and woodland.
The walk then reaches Malham Cove, a vast curved limestone amphitheatre rising around 80 metres above the valley floor. Once the site of a powerful Ice Age waterfall, it now stands as one of England’s most recognisable natural landmarks. Above the cove lies its famous limestone pavement, a cracked and weathered expanse of clints and grikes shaped slowly by rain and time.
The final stretch leads toward Malham Tarn, one of England’s highest natural lakes, sitting high in a quiet upland landscape of reeds, moorland, and open sky. After the enclosed drama of the scar and cove, the tarn feels spacious and still — a calm ending to a walk full of contrasts.
