NC500 The Complete Drive – Scotland’s 500-Mile Highland Road Trip
A sweeping journey around Scotland’s legendary North Coast 500, a 500-mile route through some of the most dramatic landscapes in Britain. From rugged sea cliffs and lonely beaches to mountain passes, fishing villages, and vast Highland skies, this complete drive captures the scale and solitude of Scotland’s far north. It’s a road trip shaped by weather, distance, and the constant sense that the landscape is bigger than anything else around you.

The NC500 begins and ends in Inverness, looping around the northern Highlands through places that feel remote, ancient, and beautifully exposed. The route passes through Easter Ross, Caithness, Sutherland, Wester Ross, and the wild northern coastline, linking together castles, crofting villages, sea lochs, mountain roads, and long stretches where the horizon seems to go on forever.
Along the way, the scenery shifts constantly. One moment the road follows a sheltered bay or winds past whitewashed cottages; the next it climbs into open moorland, with lochs glittering below and mountains rising in every direction. The west coast brings some of the route’s most spectacular drama, with narrow roads, steep gradients, and views across to islands and sea stacks.
