Goofys Railway Adventure by Disney/Westwood
What the fuck did I just play? Seriously... ignoring the ludicrous copy protection, the only interactivity in this game is hitting space. Okay, it's designed for kids, that's fine, but here's the thing: This is the single worst multiload I have ever, ever experienced.
It makes turbo out run seem like a cartridge game.
I'm sure it was a quick port from a US disk only version, but why in the everloving hell did they do this?! Why would anyone do this?! What young child is going to sit through several minutes of loading for approximatly ten seconds of "gameplay"? Seriously, the game is mostly just loading.... literally, I probably could have left it sitting there to play itself, and itw ould just have loaded bitmaps, moved the train, rinse, repeat
You have to be paying attention, too, because it just starts once the loading happens! There is no warning, not even really much noice, just.... suddenly you're playing 10 seconds of gameplay before you doze off to anotehr few minutes of loading.
Seriously, any barely competent developer could have mastered this entirely differently. Whether through the use of compression - a bitmap is 8k, and the other graphics are probably another 8k.... but it's a 64k system doing not much else, so you could totally load 3 of those screens into ram uncompressed. Compressed.... probably the whole thing. Hell, little enough is going on with the CPU that you could background load from tape. Anything. Just.... _something else_. Anything else
This is the dumbest thing I've seen on a cassette tape. Seriously, I cannot fathom how anyone thought this was a good idea.
