Norman Whitfield was having a string of success writing and producing for the Temptations by 1968, but he also produced for other artists such as Jimmy Ruffin. Jimmy Ruffin was the second artist to record "Gonna Keep On Tryin' Till I Win Your Love" and the results were outstanding. It was first recorded by Edwin Starr and then later recorded by Marvin Gaye, the Undisputed Truth, and the Temptations. Jimmy's version was released as an A-side single in November 1968.
