In a couple of weeks, my family and I will be on a plane to Kenya. This is a trip that we have been preparing for since January (2013). It was then that we were asked to assist in leading a conference for missionaries at Rift Valley Academy in Kijabe, for an organization called Africa Inland Mission. We leave for this trip on Tuesday, November 26th and return December 12th, 2013. For five days we will be serving at the conference in Kijabe in various ways. After the conference we will be heading about 8 hours from there to a remote part of Kenya to do some humanitarian/mission work with the Samburu tribe in Northern Kenya. More specifically, we will be heading to an area of Kenya known as Archer's Post.
The Samburu are a pretty amazing culture of people. If you're interested, here's a link where you can learn more about this indigenous people group of Northern Kenya: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samburu_people
While with the Samburu, my wife, niece, and kids, will be serving at a school where 130 children share one textbook! We will be taking supplies for the school that we have gathered over the past year from various sources and donors. During my time with the Samburu, I will be working with a local pastor to teach the local tribe members about water. This semi-nomadic people are in a fairly remote area of the country, and, from what I understand, clean drinking water isn't something that is readily available in their area all the time. In my time there, I will be teaching them several methods of sustainable water filtration/decontamination/purification and help them understand the importance of clean drinking water as well as several ways they can generate it in their area using both primitive and pseudo-modern methods. In all honesty, much of what I will be sharing with them will be things I have learned from many in the YouTube community, as well as from my own experience, and several books I have read regarding securing water in survival situations.
My hope is to not only teach sustainable methods for them to provide clean drinking water for their families, but to learn as much as I can from them regarding their culture and how they have sustained themselves in their part of the world. I am a bushcraft geek, (as some of you know) and it will be a privilege to be able to rub elbows and live with a people group who are in many ways living it.
In preparing for this trip, many things I am dealing with cross paths with much of what my blog and YouTube channel area geared towards and so I simply wanted to post this update to give you some idea of where my blog/channel will be headed over the next month or so. Things like survival, preparedness, water, malaria prevention, hydration, water treatment, international travel, primitive fishing etc are all things that I have been reading up on and have been preparing to encounter should something go wrong. Our contacts in the country are old friends of ours and have a good handle on our schedule while we are there.
One of my concerns at this point though is how close we will be to the Somali border with all the turmoil that has been taking place there with Al Shabaab.
If you are the praying type, we would sure appreciate your prayers for safety and effectiveness in our mission.
