I've always wanted to try squirrel. I know to some that may sound strange, but I've always been the type that likes to try new things, and learn all I can about a subject. I've been reading more and more about how people hunt and eat them, and so I thought this year I would give it a try. I've read up on several ways to process squirrel, as well as several approaches to hunting them. Today though, I decided that I would just go for a walk in the woods in trying to find some, hoping for a break. My daughter joined me and we ended up heading out into the Lost Nations State Game Area for a couple of hours on a quest of sorts to see what we might come up with. In the time we were out there, we only saw one squirrel, and it was in quite a hurry away from us.
Squirrels in our area are funny. The other day I was coming home from work, and there was a squirrel with its head buried in a leaf pile in my yard. I snuck up on it, just to see how close I could get to it before it was spooked and would run off. I ended up getting within about 3 feet from it when it popped its head up out of the leaf pile. To my surprise, it didn't look all that concerned that I was towering over it. It stared at me for a couple of seconds, then pranced off to the nearest tree. In the woods however, it seems whenever I see a squirrel, all they do is run in panic. Funny. It's as if the ones in town realize we can't do anything to them and simply want to rub that fact in. Too bad I didn't have my blowgun handy :-)
This video is a simple journal of our daddy/daughter squirrel hunt. Although it was unsuccessful in terms of a squirrel quarry, it was definitely good to be out in the woods on a day like today with my daughter.
