This video features the very first boss fight of God of War III against Poseidon, which serves as a tutorial boss. I've recorded the fight on the remastered edition of the game on PS4 and on theTitan (hard) difficulty setting.
While Poseidon is supposed to be more intimidating than legitimately challenging (fittingly, since he's part of the game's tutorial level), on Titan difficulty and above you must nevertheless be very careful if you don't want to die. Poseidon has two phases:
- The firs is fought on top of Gaia's head and revolves around freeing it from the two hyppocampi on the left and right. As you hit them, you must remember to dodge the occasional hyppocampus trying to smash you on either left or right and the electrical fields Poseidon creates on the ground. Both hazards can be easily didged by rolling in the right direction at the right time
- Once you have dealth with that, phase two begin. Now you have to attack Poseidon's main body directly and, on higher difficulties, his attacks really hurt and this is the most tense part of the fight. Poseidon can either try to punch you either from above or from the sides (an attack you can easily dodge by rolling) or try to electrify the small arena with his trident: in the latter's case he will either cover the majority of the area with eletricity and force you into the far right of it or will first slam his weapon into the far left, then in the middle and then on the far right, a combo you can evade with right positioning. After reciving enough damage Poseidon will be stunned and you'll have to perform a QTE: after that it's back to phase one
It's worth mentioning that the magical power you can use during this fight, Divine Reckoning, both dishes out great damage and makes you invulnerable during its duration, which make it perfect to survive some of Poseidon's most dangerous attacks
