It was great to head to Wingham Wildlife Park with a couple of giraffe tongue feeders for their boys. The feeders were originally built during one of our team builds at Yorkshire Wildlife Park as a trial to hang on the outdoor fencing. However, the feeders were too tall to get on and off easily, and so were replaced with a short version in a follow-up build. This meant we could take some of the originals and allow other collections to have them, such as those at Wingham.
The device allows the giraffe to use the full length of its tongue to manipulate the food through the holes, and the three sections also allow different food to be put on different levels. It's made of HDPE, and along with the sliding back, this makes it very easy for the keepers to clean.
