A huge thank you to Alison Allen Photography for sending through this beautiful footage of Rusty using the high-wire feeder that we installed at Blackpool Zoo
The first part of this video is from Alison, while the second part is from the first trial of the high wire when it was first installed. This enrichment feeder is a high tensile steel cable spanned between two posts. The food is hung from a chain which is attached to a tandem pulley, meaning as it is in use it can move back and forth, giving the tigers an amazing workout while feeding.
Why is this important? Tigers are adapted to hunting, which requires a huge amount of physical effort. However, it is illegal to give live food in a captive environment, and so to prevent issues related to lack of physical activity, feeders like this can provide a huge amount of work, benefitting muscles, bones, lungs, and heart, all the ingredients of a healthy cat.
