Breathing is done by your diaphragm and ext intercostals (muscles in between your ribs). They will expand your chest, and that chest expansion creates a vacuum between the body and your lungs and will open them up. You have NO muscles in your lungs, and they cannot do anything alone. Inspiratory Muscle Training is used by pretty much any Olympic endurance athlete. Many published medical journals are on our website under the SCIENCE tab.
