German Shepherd vs Leopard - German Shepherd fending off a leopard .
Stray and domestic dogs in India are part of 14% of leopards’ diet but generally leopards barely prey on other predators. These attacks on dogs are only the consequences of humans destroying its natural habitat and forcing the leopard to adapt to urban life, where the preys are dogs, cats, cattle and even humans.
In most cases the dogs won't be able to fend off wild leopard. Ideally a dog stray or pet would not look to attack a Leopard or Leopardess, since it would be bigger in size and in build than a normal thinner stray dog.
However, the stray dogs live in packs and they live as a unit together with or without infighting. So a single stray dog cannot match a Leopard in terms of strength, speed and ability to fight or defend, kill etc but a pack of stray dogs can.
As Leopards are apex predators in India and are natural born hunters. they can hunt any type of prey like birds, wild herbivores, ungulates, cattle, monkeys and even humans if required.
They don't have any inhibitions regarding prey, and will straightaway look forward to attack their prey. The Leopards love to kill dogs and take them away for eating as food. So a stray dog would have very little chance of survival when pitted against a formidable Leopard.
And any time when a dog fends off a wild leopard, that makes it a lot bigger news than a leopard killing a dog. As most of the time people expect a leopard to kill a dog. But when a dog fights back and stand its ground, that makes most of us happy as these scenes are rare to watch.
Some breeds might put up a fight with a leopard 1 on 1 such as the Caucasian shepherds, kangals, dogo argentino, tibetan mastiff. bully kutta. But if its a fight unto death, there is no way the dog is coming out on top. Leopards are fierce. Tremendously strong and with unmatched speed. They have teeth and 4 sets of claws, all of which it will use in a fight. The leopard's hunting technique is far too ahead of any dog breed.
Leopards will either ambush its prey or to stalk it. In either instance, it tries to get as close as possible to its target. It then makes a brief and explosive charge , pouncing on its prey and dispatching it with a bite to the neck. Once it gets hold of the neck , very few animals can get way from it. Most of them will sleep within 10 to 15 seconds.
Considering its size the leopard is still a juvenile, as its smaller in size than the German Shepherd. And with the lack of experience, when it tried to get hold of dog's neck, dog grabbed hold of its upper lip. After fighting for few seconds the leopard flee the scene, as wild animals can't risk injuries and they would avoid them if they possibly can.
