Dr. Marina Reyne’s presentation details her research on environmental pathogens and modeling infectious disease spread in wildlife. She introduces her lab's work in wastewater epidemiology, established during the COVID-19 pandemic to monitor SARS-CoV-2 in Northern Ireland. The lab expanded its scope to include other pathogens like adenovirus, tuberculosis, and influenza. Using wastewater-based epidemiology, they tracked virus concentrations and performed whole-genome sequencing to identify variants and mutations, successfully detecting the Omicron variant first in Northern Ireland.

Dr. Reyne highlights the lab’s involvement in the UK-wide PATH-SAFE program, focusing on tracking foodborne diseases and antimicrobial resistance, especially in care homes. Furthermore, with the first commercial Onso system placement in EMEA, she shared their first promising results using the PacBio short-read technology.

She discusses testing Onso with a diverse range of samples, including wastewater, surface water from an algal bloom, damselfly DNA, and clinical samples for cancer research. The results showed high-quality scores across all samples, with the wastewater samples achieving quality scores over 50.
