"Tony" by Generik

Curated by: Austin Meyer Whitlock

Genre: #techhouse

Over 10 years ago a man named Tyson O'Brien began his DJ career - hitting any club he could throughout Australia, bringing his infectious energy and good vibes everywhere he went. Over time he released a few tunes, continued his way around the arena, donned his moniker “Generik” and eventually landed himself on the Stereosonic lineup. Perhaps this turned out to be his biggest break as he was scooped up but Calvin Harris, who he now affectionately refers to as his “older brother, well, without the wedgies.” This meet-up skyrocketed Generik to success, as they both now hold down Omnia together weekly.

This type of repertoire and razzle-dazzle tends to lead one to think of the infamous “sellout” status that we so quickly like to label. But it’s tracks like Generik’s latest, “Tony” that show a true polished professionalism and musicianship. Utilizing samples from the R&B prodigy, Toni Braxton, Generik has managed to pull off a head-bobber with more character than most. launching out of the gate with an infectious melody and pitched-down chopped-up vocals. I love how the buildup sucks you in and then drops into a garage-inspired groove.

“Tony” does not feel like the latest release from an Australian party-animal, but rather the big break for an up and coming house producer - and that is what I love about it. Simple, yet experimental and leaving more on the table than it came with. It’s only my hope that artists like Generik continue to elevate quality over quality in the electronic music arena.
