Geneviève first learned Musta Lintu in Kaustinen, where its simple, haunting melody became a song of comfort – one she would hum while walking through the forest as winter turned to spring. In this intimate performance, the nyckelharpa’s resonant tone gives the tune new life, carrying the quiet strength and emotional depth of Finland’s folk tradition.
In a recent project, Geneviève changed the title of the arrangement to “Se On Sen Pituinen Se,” loosely translating to “that is all there is to tell” – a Finnish expression often used to end folktales, and a fitting close for a piece that symbolises loss, joy and transformation.
About Geneviève Andræssen
A nomadic singer, storyteller and multi-instrumentalist from the United States, Geneviève Andræssen brings together American roots, Nordic and European folk, and original songwriting. After immersing herself in Finnish traditions in Kaustinen, she joined the Global Music Programme at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Her music weaves voice, movement and story into sound worlds that feel both ancient and alive.
About the Nyckelharpa
The nyckelharpa is a traditional Swedish keyed fiddle, played with a bow and fitted with wooden keys that change the pitch of the strings. Its bell-like tone and sympathetic strings create a resonant and ethereal sound – central to Geneviève’s musical expression.
