In this video, we look at the metals in group 1, which are also called the alkali metals. We look at how the alkali metals are relatively soft. We then explore how the group 1 metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides and the trend in reactivity moving down group 1. I show you the balanced chemical equations for the reactions of lithium, sodium and potassium with oxygen and what is taking place in terms of electrons. Finally, we look at the reactions of lithium, sodium and potassium with chlorine, again using balanced chemical equations.
