Welcome back to Breakdowns & Beatdowns — I’m your boy Adam of NOLA — and today we’re reacting to a brand-new video from Christian apologist Gavin Ortlund… and yeah, I’m about to say something you don’t hear on this channel every day:
I’m grateful this video exists.
Because in a moment where too many religious voices either go silent, dodge responsibility, or sprint straight into “well what about the other side?” — Gavin does something painfully rare in American Christian discourse:
He looks at an objectively dehumanizing, racist public incident tied to President Trump’s Truth Social, and says (clearly, directly, without hand-waving):
This is intolerable.
Don’t excuse it.
Don’t minimize it.
Stop defending the indefensible.
And listen — we don’t share theology. We don’t share a worldview. And I’m sure Gavin and I would have plenty to argue about over a beer.
But when you have a platform and you claim moral leadership, this is what basic integrity looks like:
✅ condemn what’s wrong
✅ don’t normalize evil through silence
✅ don’t hide behind “it was a staffer”
✅ don’t treat “human dignity” like a partisan preference
In this reaction, I break down Gavin’s key points, where I think his framework is genuinely helpful, and where I think some common Christian reflexes (especially the “whataboutism” muscle) keep sabotaging credibility in the public square.
