myla reson | Gavin Newsom: Diablo Nuke Plant Quake Risks @mylareson | Uploaded January 2016 | Updated October 2024, 3 hours ago.
I order to continue operating it's Diablo Nuclear power plant beyond 2018, the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) must renew it's lease of tidelands owned by the State of California and administered by the California State Lands Commission. In this video the Land Commission Chair, California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom expresses his concerns about earthquake risks at the nuclear plant.
In a December 18, 2015 meeting of the State Lands Commission, Newsome voiced his conclusions. This video provides verbatim excerpts of Newsom's concerns about the siting of a nuclear power plant in a seismically unstable location.
Here are some Newsom quotes: "With all of the questions of seismic instability. Questions that seem to arrive every few years. Another fault is discovered...another question mark about its safety and its potential capacity to survive an earthquake that's certainly more modest than the outsized quake at Fukushima, but none the less a quake of 7.5 or even below depending on the quake. We discovered earthquakes in the proximity of - in some cases less than 1,000 feet from critical infrastructure of this plant - and certainly a few miles with other discoveries."
"There's a huge population density in and around the area. Over half a million people within 50 square miles."
"It's a big deal - a big deal. There's a lot of insecurity - a lot of vulnerability. In terms of where this [nuclear power plant] was sited. And I don't think PG&E in its quiet moments would disagree that this may not have been the ideal site for a [nuclear power] plant."

Get involved in the effort to shut Diablo before a quake triggers a meltdown. It isn't a question of "IF" but a question of "When".
