Following the May 14, 2014 wildfire that came within one half mile of the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant in southern California, U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer questioned the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Allison Macfarlane about Southern California Edison's requests to the NRC to be exempted from numerous safety requirements.

To the NRC's credit, in it's March 26, 2014 San Onofre inspection report, the NRC did cite Edison for eliminating 39 emergency response positions without obtaining NRC approval.

The video is an excerpt from a June 4, 2014 hearing convened in Washington D.C. by the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.

As a progressive Democrat and a pathobiologist, I am concerned about a lot of environmental health craziness that pervades our society and government — lackluster responses to climate change, fracking, nuclear power, offshore oil, the TPP…and the very existence of the Koch brothers drives me bonkers… As some of you are aware, my current focus is glyphosate (aka Roundup), the most widely used herbicide in the world, and one of the most egregious toxic substances ever created. Glyphosate contaminates our bodies, mothers’ breast milk, our kids, pets, the food chain, and the environment. Its formulations are responsible for a large variety of cancers and organ failures in humans and other animals. It plays a significant role in autism. It disorients and kills honeybees that are so necessary for pollination in CA agriculture. It has decimated Monarch butterfly populations. It even destroys soil microbiota, including the fungal mycelial mats that sequester so much carbon in our forests. That said, if it is wrong to use a product that causes such widespread morbidity and mortality, why is it allowed? Isn’t it also wrong to make money from such products? Hence, I want to encourage that we move towards banning glyphosate (and related products) in CA; and divest our financial resources (e.g., pension funds) from industries that produce such materials. Why CA? Because it’s the largest economy of the United States; it’s the 7th largest GDP in the world! What’s done here reverberates throughout the country…and beyond. CA needs to lead in being responsible for de-toxifying people, animals, and the environment. Politics be damned, this is what needs to be done for us to survive, so let’s get on with it. As a colleague at MIT, Dr. Stephanie Seneff, told me yesterday, “The chemical companies are making a killing…killing us!” Are our State and county legislators and administrators listening?
