Peace and social justice activist, actor, screenwriter, producer, director and musician, Tim Robbins addressed close to a thousand of Congressman Ted Lieu's supporters, and praised Lieu for his unsurpassed integrity, courage and vision during a community swearing-in celebration held at UCLA's Royce Hall on Saturday, March 1, 2015.
Robbins recounted how he met then-Assemblyman Lieu in 2013 during Robbins’ time as artistic director for the Actors’ Gang. Lieu was a member of California's Legislative Joint Committee on the Arts. Robbins addressed the committee and testified about how the Actors' Gang Prison Project had benefitted both incarcerated individuals and the State of California. Lieu went on to successfully advocate for enough funding in the State's budget to restart the Arts in Corrections program - as well as his success in securing additional money for the arts throughout the state of California.
"Who is this politician who advocates for prison reform and arts funding? Who is this anomaly? doesn't he know that prisoners don't vote?" ~ Tim Robbins
Integrity. Most honorable and honest
In his speech, Robins highlights then State Senator Ted Lieu's courage in both taking on Wall Street. and writing the first law in the U.S. that bans sexual orientation conversion therapy for minors. A bill that was passed into law and replicated in over a dozen U.S. states.
The speech ends with praise for Ted Lieu's leadership in the fight against climate change.
