Playthrough with Mai. This is a port of the Hyper Neo Geo 64 game, and was the only game for that system to receive a console port. Storyline wise, this is a retelling of the first game in the Fatal Fury series. When I originally beat this I used Mr. Karate. I didn’t give this game much of a chance last time, I just beat it using the cheapest character I could find and moved on. So I wanted to not use a boss this time round.
The main problem I have with this game are the controls. The actual controls are fine, it uses the same button layout as the Real Bout games. But it often feels much more difficult than it should be do get some of the special moves to work consistently, the game constantly eats your inputs and sometimes even doing a basic quarter circle forward move is a challenge. The CPU is the usual obnoxious standard SNK are famous for, they tend to counter a lot.
The reason I chose Mai is because of how easily she can beat Geese. Geese is at his cheapest in this game. What you need to do is jump towards him, for some reason he’ll usually do his counter even if Mai hasn’t done an attack. What you then need to do is use Mai’s squirrel dance move (down+punch+kick) whilst she’s still in the air. Geese should try and do his counter again, but it won’t work and he’ll get hit. Then just keep doing this. If you get the timing wrong his counter will work against it, as seen several times in this playthrough, but it was still the best way I could find to defeat him.
The PS1 port of this game has downgraded visuals compared to the arcade version. The most obvious difference is the backgrounds -in the arcade version, these are animated, but in the PS1 port, they aren’t. Because some of the cutscenes are FMVs using footage from the arcade version, you can briefly see Billy’s animated background at 13:35. Two extra unlockable characters, Mr. Karate and Duck King, were added, along with an arranged version of the soundtrack and a new FMV intro.
If you beat the game without losing any rounds, you’ll get to fight Ryo Sakazaki, who is called Mr. Karate here, in a dream match. He seems to use one of Kyo Kusanagi’s sound clips for one of his moves, oddly? At 26:22. If you beat Mr. Karate, it cuts straight to the credits without playing your character’s ending. But this game has a gallery mode where you can view all the cutscenes, so I played Mai’s ending from there instead.
