Winter is the easiest albeit slowest, season for gardening; for those of us in temperate or semi temperate zones there are a variety of winter crops can be planted reliably. This year I planted garlic, two types of cabbage, DiCecci broccoli, romanesco, lacitino kale, swiss chard, arugula, parsley and spinach. Other good options are mache, some harty lettuces, cauliflower, leeks and brussels sprouts. In mild years I'll generally start seeing growth in January/February and if the winter is really warm I'll be harvesting early March. Some years I loose all of my seeds to a hard freeze, but not all years. I've also had success planting in October and over wintering many of these crops with only a sheet of Reemay covering them. For an added layer of insurance cover the crops with hoop houses, cold frames or cloches.
