How can global health research remain resilient and impactful amid geopolitical tensions and declining multilateral cooperation? This World Health Summit 2025 workshop explored how research ecosystems can adapt to shifting political landscapes while sustaining collaboration, equity, and innovation.
The session examined emerging partnership models that support locally led research, community engagement, and South-South collaboration. Speakers discussed how to strengthen bottom-up innovation, ensure that research priorities reflect community needs, and build research systems capable of withstanding political and financial volatility.
Participants also reflected on the role of research alliances in sustaining collaboration across borders. Examples from the German Alliance for Global Health Research (GLOHRA) illustrated how networks can connect disciplines, institutions, and regions; promote equitable partnerships; and keep research agendas aligned with global priorities, even in times of fragmentation.
This workshop was part of the World Health Summit 2025 in Berlin and was co-hosted by GLOHRA. Moderator and speakers included Merike Blofield (University of Hamburg), Veronika von Messling (Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space), Alice Lakati (Amref International University), Michael Makanga (EDCTP3), Joël Arthur Kiendrébéogo (Ministry of Health, Burkina Faso), and Peter Piot (LSHTM).
