This funny drunk test was an early alcohol test invented to prevent drunk people from driving drunk. This version was a fail, but it later evolved into the DUI tests that are used today.
This German footage from March 31, 1960 illustrates early efforts to curb drunk driving and enforce alcohol laws. In America, drunk driving became illegal in 1910 and the breathalyzer wasn't invented until 1953 by Robert Borkenstein. It wasn't until the 1970's and 1980's that police in the US began to crack down on drunk driving and efforts were made to increase awareness of it's dangers.
