The Model T, launched in 1908 by the Ford Motor Company, was named "Tin Lizzie," and she helped unite people from near and far. The "Tin Lizzie" only went 40 miles per hour. While she wasn't quick or even very pretty, she was inexpensive, and for the first time, a working person could afford to buy a car. The Model T put the world on wheels. It's been written that "in a matter of days after the release, 15,000 orders were placed," and with Ford's Highland Park Plant in Detroit, Michigan, the new assembly line allowed for quick and affordable mass production. On October 1, 1908 the first Model T began to ship to customers. The cars were sold for between $260 to $850. The "Tin Lizzie," or Model T, made her family — the Fords — famous with over 15,000,000 Model T's built and sold, and by the early 1920s accounting for more than half of the registered cars worldwide. Through dirt roads, redwood trees, cities, mountains and countryside, the Model T drove everywhere. By 1927 production ceased as Ford moved on to other models. It’s a remarkable story of luck, pluck and desire.
