The Petersen Automotive Museum is a non-profit organization specializing in automobile history and related educational programs. Located in Los Angeles, it is one of the world's largest automotive museums. The Petersen Automotive Museum is dedicated to the exploration and presentation of the automobile and its impact on American life and culture using Los Angeles as the prime example. The museum was founded in 1994 by magazine publisher Robert E. Petersen and his wife Margie. Originally located within the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, it was later moved to a historic department store designed by Welton Becket. Opened in 1962, the museum features 25 galleries with more than 350 vehicles on display between the main floors and the museum’s exclusive Vault. Visitors can immerse themselves in the 1000's of stories on display in the museum. The museum also offers a variety of educational programs for all ages, including lectures, workshops, and driving experiences.
The first Shelby exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum opened on May 30, 2012 to honor the life and legacy of Carroll Shelby. Carroll Shelby International, Inc. and Ford Motor Company organized the exhibit, which was curated by Leslie Kendall. The exhibit featured a number of Shelby's most iconic cars, including the Cobra, the GT350, and the GT500. Fans also had an opportunity to film a message about Mr. Shelby. The exhibit was a huge success, and it helped to introduce Shelby's cars to a new generation of car enthusiasts. The most recent Shelby exhibit at the Petersen Museum was on January 15, 2023. The museum hosted a variety of events to celebrate the anniversary of the Shelby Cobra, including a cruise-in, a collection tour, and a rally. The exhibit featured a number of rare and iconic Shelby vehicles, including the original Cobra Daytona Coupe and the 1965 Shelby GT350R. The Petersen Automotive Museum (open seven days a week) is a popular tourist destination, and a valuable resource for car enthusiasts and historians.
