Jodi Robuck's first beet harvest: one bunch. Maybe $3. Twelve months later, the same bed produces over $850. Not luck — he changed one variable at a time until the math worked.
The progression: 3 rows per bed at $250/harvest (below his $400 minimum benchmark) → switched transplanters and bent the furrow closer to sit deeper → went from 3 rows to 5 (67% more plants) → switched from round varieties to elongated (grows down, not out — 40–50% more weight per beet at the same spacing) → dialed in 6mm drop seeder plate at 4-inch chain spacing. Final result: 85 kg (187 lbs) per 50-foot bed = $850/harvest.
What didn't work: 8mm plate (too dense), late-fall planting (couldn't size up before winter). Both failures defined boundaries that successful harvests couldn't.
The 5-variable diagnostic for any underperforming crop: row count (can I fit more?), equipment (is it limiting me?), variety (does the growth habit match my system?), timing (do I know my hard start/stop dates?), density (am I at the optimal seeding rate?). Improve each by 20% and the compound effect is 2.5x.
