He spent 30+ years in product design and manufacturing. Then at 55, Neil Robinson left his desk job in New Zealand and started a market garden from scratch.
This interview covers the unfiltered first-year reality: 15 weeks of showing up to a farmer's market before sales felt consistent. $400 was a good day in those early weeks β now a good week is over $800, pushing past $1,000 with the right product mix. Profit margin around 35% (with his own labor coming out of that 35%, not counted as a cost).
Neil's lean manufacturing background turned out to be his most transferable skill. Workstation layout with no cross-body reaching. Everything to hand. Ramping production like an assembly line β quality first, then speed. Poka-yoke thinking applied to seeding stations. The concept of just-in-time applied to harvest timing and freshness.
His farmer's market strategy: eye-catching "attraction" crops (pattypan squash, compact pumpkins) to draw foot traffic, while banker crops (carrots, radishes, salad mix) drive consistent revenue. French breakfast radishes: 30 bunches at $5 consistently. Missing radishes on a given week measurably drops total sales.
The honest assessment: still not hitting his financial goals, 35% margins on revenue that needs to roughly double, one part-time employee trained well enough that Neil can take days off and come home to a cooler packed exactly right. Semi-retirement pace, long-haul mindset, slow grind.
