Jason Martin of Fallbrook Guns and Ammo got an email offering his shop money to give away lockboxes to active duty military. He and his two partners read it, looked at each other, and figured it had to be Moms Demand Action or Brady wearing a new hat. So he went and found out who was really behind it.
In this interview:
-What Pause to Protect is, and how a service member actually gets a safe (show an active duty ID, that is it)
-No application, no paperwork, no personal information collected, no registry
-Who funds it: the Department of War, with the University of Colorado as the front door
-Why shop owners from around the country came in skeptical and left comfortable with it
-The real storage problem nobody has solved: barracks Marines still cannot keep a firearm on base, because Navy Region Southwest has not built a plan around the order that was supposed to allow it
-What happens to guns surrendered under a GVRO, and why storage fees sometimes exceed what the firearm is worth
-How to find a participating shop near you, anywhere in the country
Michael's read on it is simple: there is nothing wrong with a safe, there is nothing anti-gun about the Department of War, nobody is collecting your information, and an active duty Marine walks out with something useful for free. That is a good deal for everybody.
