French is a Romance language that evolved from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman Empire, specifically from Gallo-Romance in Northern Gaul. It is closely related to other langues d'oïl spoken in northern France and southern Belgium. French has become an official language in 27 countries and is widely spoken across about 50 countries and territories.
Breton is a Southwestern Brittonic language from the Celtic group, spoken in Brittany, France. It is the only Celtic language still widely used in mainland Europe. Britons brought Breton to Armorica (modern-day Brittany) during the Early Middle Ages, making it an Insular Celtic language. It is closely related to Cornish and more distantly to Welsh and the extinct Cumbric. Breton has declined from over a million speakers in 1950 to around 200,000 in the early 21st century, leading UNESCO to classify it as "severely endangered." However, bilingual education programs have seen growth.
