The Forest Kingfisher is widespread down the Eastern and Northern parts of Australia. They can be observed in various habitats including open forest, Sclerophyll forest and Grasslands. They hunt by 'still perching' and diving on their prey which includes Small reptiles and beetles. They nest in a hollow or a termite nest on the side of a tree. Attention is often drawn to them by their trilling call. Two diagnostic features are the pale 'goggles' above the eyes and also the pale 'windows' in the wings when they fly.
